The National Association of Independent & Non-Maintained Special Schools (NASS) has written to the Prime Minister to set out four priorities for SEND reform.
The association wrote to Andy Burnham in his first week in office calling for his government to protect of rights around Education, Health and Care Plans and offer timely access to special education; fund support according to need; build a sustainable workforce and invest in capacity before needs escalate.
NASS sent four separate briefing papers to the Prime Minister covering each “ask”. In the briefing paper on workforce, it said it was particularly concerned by approaches that could focus on expanding provision without addressing workforce capacity; prioritise recruitment initiatives without improving retention; overlook the expertise of specialist support staff and allied professionals; fail to provide clear specialist career pathways; and underestimate the impact of workload, accountability pressures and staff wellbeing.
